Standard 3: Geography

1. Geography can be divided into six essential elements, which can be used to analyze important historic, geographic, economic, and environmental questions and issues. These six elements include: the world in spatial terms, places and regions, physical settings (including natural resources), human systems, environment and society, and the use of geography.

Map information about people, places, and environments understand the characteristics, functions, and applications of maps, globes, aerial and other photographs, satellite-produced images, and models

2. Geography requires the development and application of the skills of asking and answering geographic questions; analyzing theories of geography; and acquiring, organizing, and analyzing geographic information.

Use a number of research skills (e.g., computer databases, periodicals, census reports, maps, standard reference works, interviews, surveys) to locate and gather geographical information about issues and problems

Present geographic information in a variety of formats, including maps, tables, graphs, charts, diagrams, and computer-generated models

II.             INSTRUCTIONAL DATA:

                        A.    Objectives:

Students will be able to explore the world using Google Earth.

Students will be able to navigate from the world to students home on Google Earth.

Students will be able use Google earth to create their own "tour" of the world.

Students will be able to locate a continent, an ocean, mountain range and lakes.

B.    Assessment Plan:

Informal assessment by walking around examining student’s abilities to use mapping tools to find specific places and natural boundaries using checklist to collect data (attached p. 50).

Students will print out a map of where they live and their house.

Students will be graded with rubric (attached p. 51).

III.           INSTRUCTIONAL PROCESS

A.    Anticipatory Set/Motivation: Have a map, globe and Google Earth projected on whiteboard.  Begin this lesson by asking students what these items are?  Have students come up and find North America, New York, Alden and their school on the map and the globe.  Can they find them all? Now WOW them with Google Earth.  Have students locate an ocean and a continent

Main Body/ Procedure:

Teacher will use insight to control student computers modeling and demonstrating one step at a time. Teacher do – Student do – Teacher do – Student do

Have students get their laptops and login.

Open Google Earth (by going to Start - Programs - Google Earth)

Have students begin at the world (type in World at the search field – hit enter)

Click on pushpin, move pin to where you want it – Label pin world - click OK

Now have students type in North America in the search field

Click on pushpin, move pin to where you want it – Label pin North America - click OK

Next have students type New York State in the search field

Click on pushpin, move pin to where you want it – Label pin New York State - click OK

Now have students type in Alden NY

Click on pushpin, move pin to where you want it – Label pin Alden NY- click OK

Finally have students type in their address in the search field

Click on pushpin, move pin to where you want it – Label pin (name) house - click OK

Have students click on all pins in order to see the distance from each point.

Now have students go to the Alden pin and print a copy (make sure you can see your Alden pin and your house pin.

Click print – Choose & click graphic of 3D View – Click Low – Click Most recent Search Results – Print

Have students click on Add – Tour- click the record button, then click on all your pins in order.

Students that have completed tasks may continue to explore various tools.

B.    Closure/Ending:

The teacher will then have students Play their “tour.” Discuss the distances between the world, continent, our state, town, and their home.  Teacher will ask students: From what we learned why do you think maps are important to know about?  Do maps help us in our daily lives?  How?  What do maps help us do?

C.   Accommodations/Adaptations for Diverse Learners:

Special Needs: students will be shown how to increase the size of the websites for larger font size.  ESL students will be given assistance by the ESL support.

Remedial - Teacher will assist students when necessary. Teacher will guide students to Google Earth and walk students through additional steps if needed.

Enrichment Activities- Students will be able to help the remedial students by being paired up with one when needed.  Students that have completed tasks may continue to explore various tools.

IV.           OVERALL EFFECTIVENESS

A.        All Components of the Lesson are connected to the Objectives.

Clarity of ideas- lesson was managed and created with the thought of a fifth grader participating in the learning. The ideas are clear and appropriate for a fifth grader to perform on a computer.  The skills that we would be touching on are using Google Earth tools to locate and measure distances.  Locate oceans, continents, and New York State.

A logical flow- lesson was well thought out and has a steady flow from one activity to the next. All ideas are consistent with each other.

Developmentally appropriate practice- fifth graders are familiar with laptops and how Google Earth works.

Appropriate activities for stage of reader- the materials that the child is asked to do independently is fifth grade appropriate.

B.        Culturally Responsive Teaching

This is a great lesson to reinforce mapping skills.  Throughout the lesson, I will be sensitive to the fact that many disrespectful behaviors are associated with gender, age, ethnic, class, & sexuality differences. I will reinforce with students that it is important to treat people respectfully at all times and that we should celebrate differences.

V.             Reflection:

I wanted to use Google Earth for a social studies lesson.  I thought that this lesson would really engage the students, because they would be learning about the relationships between world, continent, state, town and home and they also love to use Google Earth to find where they live and zoom in on their house.  I asked both my kids one in middle school and one in high school about the lesson I created, they both said that they would have enjoyed learning social studies using Google Earth.
